Donnalda Smolens Fine Art
Welcome to Donnaldas Gallery. Here is where you will find her passion for painting expressed in many media. She is a romantic and it comes out in her work.

This is a pastel drawing done on Strathmore Colored Heavy Drawing Paper. I love this paper because it has great texture for pastels and it is already mid-tone coloured. It is also very sturdy. I love doing detailed pastels, this rosebud looks like it is enjoying a dewy morning. Image size 11x15 inches.

I love Edward Sheriff Curtis photos, because of the nuetral tones and dramatic lighting. I have added a sketchy hand drawn quality and edited to make it my own. Done with various drawing media. Image size 9x12.

This is a charcoal, pastel drawing depicting a Siberian Tiger. It is done on Strathmore Premium colored drawing paper (light pink). It has been sprayed with fixative. It is recommended that this piece be framed under glass only, because plexiglass will eventually pull the particles from the paper onto itself with static electricity. Image size 9x12.

This is a watercolor based on the Cahuilla spiritual belief of beginning and end. The moon maiden is holding the egg (beginning) while the barn owl sits on her shoulder (symbol of death or endings). Painted on Strathmore 140 lb. cold press watercolor paper. Approximately 9 x 12.

This is one in a series of over 3 years of painting on site at Cabot's Pueblo Museum in Desert Hot Springs, CA. I love this place, I don't think I will ever run out of subject matter there. This is one of the charming out buildings on the site. The sun was setting and the shadows were fabulous.

This is another view of Nellies House through the giant Saguaros that stand silent vigil over the grounds. The birds all love the fruit and bird watching is plentiful during this time. 8x10 image size.

Oil Paintings

This is a superfocused painting of a white peony with the lighting coming from behind it. It just glows. Approximately 18 x 24 inches on stretched canvas, unframed. Painted in oils.

This is a painting of my ceramics pieces that I use to decorate my front yard. I love the colors of the salt grass and old log next to the pottery shards. I used about 10 layers of glazes on the finish to create the depth. Approximately 20x 24 inches.

This is an oil painting that I did to work out some of the challenges to depict moonlight. I used Prussian blue and a rub out technique to create the composition. Then I used other colors but always mixed with Prussian blue for the details. Then to create depth, I used at least 30 layers of glazes. Approximately 30 x 36 inches.
